Will The Recession Come to an End

We are all wondering the same big question….when will this recession come to a final end? We are all sitting around hoping, praying and looking to the government and our new president to tell us when this will be all over. On Tuesday chairman Bernanke put thing’s into somewhat of a perspective for us.

Mr. Bernanke stated that a full recovery for the recession is at least a full year away still, and that is only if things go exactly as planned right now. He stated that if the government, congress and federal reserves actions are to go as planned then 2010 will be our year of recovery. Can we wait that long? Will there be small steps of help during this year to get us by?

Recession hits everything. Even the funnies.

Brenda Starr, girl reporter, was laid off this weekend by her newsroom boss B. Babbitt Bottomline. She’s not alone in her comic axed-ness — office cubicle mainstay Dilbert was fired earlier this year for starting his own business on company time. Of course, Dilbert only started the business because he knew he was next in line to get laid off anyways. We don’t know what Brenda’s doing next — Dilbert, it seems, has become an entrepreneur.

Reflections on Leaders in Crisis: How are you handling these challenging times? What's working for you? What's not?

Last week I spent four days working with a department within a large organization that is and has been in crisis for the past six months. They have had lay-offs, positions have been eliminated, all staff were mandated to take 4 unpaid furlough days, and personnel changes made at higher levels in the organization are circling around the department wondering how much more can be cut. Needless to say, leadership is stressed out; under incredible pressure to produce results with fewer and fewer resources. I am there to develop the leadership team so that they can stay focused on their priorities and build and grow the department and its staff. Below are my reflections on this time working with these incredibly courageous and inspirational leaders.

Surviving a Downturn

From a business owner’s perspective, whether Maine’s economy is in a recession or not is somewhat immaterial. Like sailing the Maine coast, managing a small business in Maine’s challenging economy can be difficult even during the best of times. In the midst of an economic downturn, however, the activity becomes essential and doing it well is often the determining factor between staying afloat and going under. Whether good times or bad, businesses often find themselves in the middle of a cash crunch and need to know how to steer the business back to ‘safe harbor’.

Recession Has Its Upside For Mobile

By Tim Hay

While the cooling of the world’s economy has slowed the pace of business at nearly every level, the recession has changed the game considerably for developers of new mobile technologies – in some cases even opening up new and unforeseen opportunities.

“It’s easy to be gloom and doom” about the economy, said Mark Lowenstein, managing director of industry analysis firm Mobile Ecosystem. “But things are still reasonably good. Mobile is over-indexing the rest of the economy…We’re seeing growth in non-traditional players.”

Tough Times Call for New Ideas

It's a scary time to own a business, and the knee-jerk reaction may be to just keep chugging along and wait out the financial storm. But that's a risky decision.

This recession is expected to be longer, deeper and deadlier for businesses than any this nation has seen in decades.

The savviest entrepreneurs right now aren't hunkering down. They're rethinking their business models and hunting for new strategies based on the assumption that consumer spending won't be rebounding to prerecession levels and that the types of products and services people want will be much different from before.

The "R" Word and Small Business: It's a Jungle Out There!

Turn on your television to watch the news, read your morning paper, everywhere you look the word "recession" rears its ugly head. It's amazing to me that a word that was mostly avoided up to a year ago and was "something we were not in" according to the past administration, suddenly became the vocabulary of the day.

My theory is, if the government really would like to know when a recession will occur, interview some SBDC consultants. Based on what happened back in the early 90's and what has happened recently, there are certain predictors we often see in terms of the small business habitat.

Not unlike Marlin Perkins and Wild Kingdom, we can do a little safari run, and look at some of the predictors we see that indicate we may be coming into a "dry season."
