Finding your way through a tough time

I stopped by one of my favorite local shops the other day in search of a birthday gift. I was stunned when I walked through the store at the lack of inventory. Just months ago, the store was so full that it was difficult to move through some of the displays. Now, it looks barren by comparison.

Managing Your Finances to Stay Profitable

When it comes to effective financial management, you need to understand that the task is not solely the responsibility of the accounting department. Each individual department is responsible for their own budget, supplies, and the allocation and appropriate use of company funds. With some basic training and education, this can be accomplished.

The larger your company is, the greater the financial complexities - but the processes and goals still remain the same. Financial management takes careful planning; however, doing so will prove to be beneficial in the long run.

If you need to cut costs, here’s some tips on how to break the bad news to the staff.

Many business owners today are finding themselves in the same position: The down economy forces them to make tough cost-cutting decisions, which may entail layoffs, pay cuts and reduced hours. Online Reputation Management

As though small business owners didn’t already have enough on their plates, they must now make room for online reputation management (ORM). The Internet has become one of our major forms of communication. This means that consumer advocates, media and customers can post their professional and amateur opinions and experiences with your company within minutes of doing business with you.

Let’s say something goes horribly wrong during a business transaction with one of your customers. Using Twitter, that customer can post a negative (and possibly skewed) opinion of you via their cell phone to over 700,000 people, within seconds. Also, through blogs, YouTube and Facebook, consumers and professionals are free to share their opinions and experiences across the globe. These social networking tools now make it essential for business owners to be diligent in monitoring their online reputation.
