Do not be fooled by offers telling you how to get free government money to start your business or to pay off your individual debt. There is not free money available for this! Several Web sites and internet ads state that free government grants are available and will even show you pictures of people who have received their checks. This is all a scam.

Recovery Act More Than Doubles Surety Bond Guarantee Ceiling for Small Businesses 3-27-09

WASHINGTON – Effective today, small businesses that need surety bonds to compete for construction and service contracts can qualify for U.S. Small Business Administration-backed surety bonds of up to $5 million. The higher amount, a result of the Recovery Act, is more than double the previous $2 million maximum surety bond guaranteed by SBA.

My Network Stimulus Package

Google Searches for Startups

Google has established a venture capital fund that will be formally unveiled tomorrow, The New York Times reports. The fund could be seeded with as much as $100 million.

Its focus will, as might be expected, include internet ventures, clean technologies and life sciences. The fund will be run by David Drummond, senior vice president of corporate developing and chief legal officer at the web-search giant, the paper reports. "A lot of the things we have done in the energy area [are] the kinds of things you might see from Google Ventures," Drummond said.

The SBA's forthcoming loan-relief program can't be used to pay down existing SBA loans -- but past borrowers will still be eligible for help with other debts.

The Small Business Administration is still drawing up guidelines for its forthcoming emergency loans program, a stopgap measure intended to shore up small businesses struggling to keep up with payments on existing debt. How to Rebrand Your Business

Last week, AIG CEO Edward Liddy told Capitol Hill, "I think the AIG name is so thoroughly wounded and disgraced that we're probably going to have to change it." Rep. Paul Hodes (D-N.H.) added that AIG now stands for "arrogance, incompetence and greed."

There's an important branding lesson to be learned here--namely, if you've screwed up royally, changing your name and rebranding your business is a good idea.
