One-Person Human Resources Department Grows by the Hour

FREEHOLD CARTAGE is a waste collection and disposal company with 350 workers in seven states. Sandy Shea visits each site once a year, on employee appreciation day.

"We have a barbecue, give away some prizes - the idea is just to have some face time with everyone, and let them know we really do appreciate them," said Shea, human resources director for the Freehold company. "I am on the phone with these guys all the time, and it's really nice to see them once in a while."
