The Shoemaker's Children

This week I seem to be surrounded by dysfunctional electronics, and I am not a happy camper. Or maybe they just are attracted to me, or I to them.

My oven is on its third electronic control panel in as many months. It has very fancy touch-pad controls, and when we first got it everything on the panel worked with the sole exception of the on/off switch. And the fact that it couldn't get beyond 290 degrees - it was a very expensive crock pot. Cooking the turkey for Thanksgiving took the better part of the day. But perhaps the third time will be the charm.

Two of the First Successful Women Entrepreneurs in America

According to both Census Bureau data and anecdotal evidence, women are considered one of the fastest growing segments of American entrepreneurs. That said, two of the first, cosmetics moguls: Elizabeth Arden and Helena Rubinstein are getting a fresh look in a new PBS documentary. Scheduled for broadcast on March 23, the 90-minute The Powder & the Glory, (based on the book War Paint by Lindy Woodhead) tells the story of how these two pioneering women and their namesake companies hatched what is today a $150 billion beauty industry.

Racketeering Trial Starts For Grocery Entrepreneur

The federal racketeering trial of Los Angeles grocery magnate George Torres is scheduled to begin tomorrow. Federal prosecutors allege the 52-year-old founder of Los Angeles-based Numero Uno stores conspired to kill, bribed a public official, robbed, extorted, committed fraud and laundered drug money as he expanded his grocery empire.

Small Biz Success Story

Ginny Jones started Kinetic Electric Group by tapping the family bank.

To start her electrical contracting business, Ginny took $75,000 out of her family’s savings and used her credit cards.

Over the following months her staff grew from three employees to 45. In their first year, they did $1.875,000 in gross revenue.

Auto Repair Shops Find Economic Fix

Detroit might be a bust, but auto repair shops are doing just fine, according to small business data tracker BizEquity.

The firm states that repair and maintenance facilities have grown in value since mid-year 2008, by $4.578 billion and $1.321 billion respectively. Compare that to a nearly $8 billion deflation for new car dealers since mid-year, according to BizEquity.
